Dr Materman is a fully qualified and registered medical practitioner who specialises in ophthalmology. An accomplished consultant eye surgeon specialising in LASIK and LASEK laser eye surgery procedures, he gained his full registration as a medical practitioner in 1992.
Dr Materman's wealth of ophthalmic experience has been gathered throughout a career which has seen him carry out treatments in the UK and abroad. Originally from New Zealand, he took up a Senior House Officer position in Ophthalmology in Auckland before spending a year working as a volunteer doctor at the Tilganga Eye Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal.
After returning to New Zealand, Dr Materman completed a 4 year training program in Wellington followed by a Locum Ophthalmologist position for two years before moving to the UK in 2003 as an Ophthalmic Fellow at the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust. He then held a post at Moorfields Eye Hospital with the Glaucoma Service. Following on from that, he completed a Refractive Surgery Fellowship with the renowned ophthalmologist, current International Medical ADvisory Board member and previous medical director Dr Jan Venter and has been practising as a refractive surgeon specialising in laser vision correction since 2007.
Dr Materman is an active member of affiliated bodies including the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He has made presentations in many different countries about laser eye surgery and regularly attends conferences about laser vision correction and the advancing field of ophthalmology.
