Our ‘Thanks a Million’ (TAM) campaign has been running since 2017, and to date, we’ve donated over £4 million worth of eye surgery to frontline workers, healthcare professionals and unpaid carers.
Rebecca's story
Rebecca is just one of the thousands of patients we’ve treated free-of-charge under the TAM campaign.
She had previously used glasses on and off throughout her life, but after the birth of her son, and a later diagnosis of hydrocephalus, her vision rapidly declined.
Hydrocephalus is a build-up of fluid in the brain, which creates symptoms such as headaches, sickness, difficulty walking and blurred Ivison. After her diagnosis, Rebecca needed her glasses for almost everything including watching TV, driving and reading. Whilst she received treatment for the condition, her vision struggles continued.
Working at the Royal Infirmary, one of Glasgow’s busiest hospitals, Rebecca spent long shifts caring for patients in the accident and emergency department. She was constantly worried about losing or breaking her glasses while on shift
Life-changing surgery
Rebecca had applied for our TAM campaign on the recommendation of a friend and was delighted when she was picked. She said,
“Honestly couldn’t believe it. I’ve never won anything in my life, so when I got the email, I was completely shocked. To be chosen for something like this felt incredible.”
Rebecca underwent laser eye surgery at our Edinburgh clinic, and the results were almost immediate.
She says that the surgery not only helped in her incredible work for the NHS, but also in her personal life. She can now focus all her attention on her 18-month-old son and not on remembering where her glasses are.
