How to help banish puffy eyes

Puffy eyes can make you look tired, even if you've had a full 8 hours sleep the night before. Fatigue can sometimes be the root cause; however there are a number of other factors that can cause eyes to appear puffy:

  • Over consumption of salt can cause your body to hold on to any fluids, and as there is a lot of salt in the tissue surrounding your eyes, it can really show here
  • Allergies can cause inflammation and swelling around your eyes, especially if you rub them
  • Sinus problems
  • Dehydration
  • Stress
  • Crying
  • Natural ageing
  • Poor contact lens care can cause infections and the spread of bacteria
  • Unfortunately, it can just be inherited in your genes

The good news is, if you suffer from puffy eyes, there are a number of things you can do to help alleviate the problem. Puffy eyes are rarely a sign of something medically wrong, but if you are worried then you can make an appointment to have an overall eye check at your local Optical Express. You can try the following remedies if you are showing signs of puffy eyes:

  • Eye drops if your allergies are causing inflammation and irritation
  • Drink lots of water to combat dehydration
  • An ice compress applied to the eyes will help swelling and puffiness
  • Using creams that are formulation for around the eyes
  • Reducing your salt intake
  • Eating potassium-rich foods that help stabilise swelling, such as bananasĀ 
  • For a quick fix throughout the day, splash cold water across your eyes and face
  • Get lots of sleep and rest!

You should attend your local optician to get your eyes tested every two years to ensure maximum eye health.
