About Dr Stephen Hannan
Dr Stephen Hannan is a member of the Corporate Board and the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) of the Optical Express Group. Alongside his role with Optical Express, he holds clinical, operational and commercial responsibilities across three additional group healthcare brands: ACES, sk:n and The Harley Medical Group.
He is the Group Clinical Services Director and an Independent Prescribing Optometrist, with more than 20 years’ experience spanning healthcare, ophthalmology, optometry and clinical governance. In 2025, he was awarded a PhD.
Dr Hannan joined Optical Express in 2002 and was appointed Clinical Services Director in 2010. Over the course of his career with the organisation, he has personally provided care to more than 100,000 patients through a combination of routine and urgent eye examinations, as well as pre- and post-operative refractive surgery consultations.
In his current role, he oversees the clinical performance of more than 300 optometrists and ophthalmologists, who collectively deliver in excess of 500,000 clinical examinations each year.
Dr Hannan is the lead or co-author of 40 peer-reviewed publications published since July 2009, with several additional papers currently in development. His research aims to educate and inform the wider ophthalmic and clinical communities, covering a broad range of refractive surgery topics and appearing in leading scientific journals. He is also a frequent speaker at national and international conferences, where he regularly presents on cataract and refractive surgery to professional audiences.
