My name is Jean Michel Gauffre. I’m the owner of La Garrigue restaurant in Edinburgh. My sight was very important to me in every walk of life I suppose but it was a thing you take for granted. When I started wearing glasses about 15 years ago and it had a big impact. I remember it happened suddenly to me and one morning watching television I couldn’t read the wording on the screen and decided to have my eyes checked and that was it. Working in the restaurant with glasses can create problems- especially in the kitchen when cooking with the steam or the splashing! I was always cleaning my glasses then they were getting greasier and greasier as the day went on so there were a lot of issues to wearing glasses in the restaurant. No, I never considered lens surgery or any other kind of surgery for my eyes but when the opportunity came along to have a look into it I decided to have a go. The fact I wanted to enquire helped me make the decision I suppose but long term it’s something I think I would have done anyway. Wearing glasses and losing them was getting more difficult and annoying for me. To be able to read menus, read my emails in the morning and to be able to read the labels on bottles of wine without having to look for my glasses that was my main interest for surgery.
The type of surgery I had was multifocal lens replacement surgery. My experience of the surgery was a 50 minute delay in my working day. I couldn’t believe how efficient and fast the operation was. After the surgery I felt a little bit drowsy but I felt fine and I was expecting some kind of pain which I’m still waiting to arrive.
The staff at Optical Express were fantastic from day one, both in the advice and support given all the way through. At my first meeting with Optical Express the staff gave me the confidence to go ahead with the operation. I made the decision to go ahead practically on the spot they were so convincing without being pushy. The fact that surgery was the answer to correct my eye sight long term.
Well there are many benefits to it. The first one: stop searching for my glasses in the morning, be able to read what kind of shampoo I’m using whether it’s mine or my wife’s, being able to pick up any newspaper and read them without glasses. The only inconvenience, if I may say this, is the time I spend looking for my glasses then I realise I don’t need them anymore but that’s it!
In terms of the difference of the operation at work I found out I can go easier on the kitchen duties. I can string whatever is cooking and the steam doesn’t affect my eye sight anymore. I’m doing a lot more of emails and on the computer more often now a days and I used to get tired after a while with glasses and I’ve noticed that is something I don’t have anymore. I can spend much longer time on the computer and I can read any kind of small detail more easily. I think every day you pick up different bits of pieces I never thought of before. Reading a recipe or even looking for ingredients for a special product- I don’t have to put my glasses on, I can read straight away!
The big difference was for the colour. I think the colour is much sharper than what I thought it was going to be. That’s something I was not told about. Especially in my restaurant as I have a lot of paintings. The colours of the paintings are somehow different to the paintings I was looking at a few weeks ago.
I have a granddaughter called Amelia Rose and she’ll be struggling to grab my glasses off my nose now. I’m looking forward to taking her swimming more often which is another great asset.
A few of my friends and family had different kinds of eye operations in the past, the laser surgery. I was surprised how quickly the recovery time was and the fact there was no pain considering how everyone knows how “chicken” I can be so it was a surprise to a lot of people.
If I could sum up the experience in one word… Fantastic!

June’s winner of laser eye surgery was Alasdair Duncan from Cuminestown. After attending a consultation at our Aberdeen clinic, he was found unsuitable for the surgery. As an alternative prize, Alasdair is entitled to a massive £500 to treat himself to a new pair of glasses, contact lenses or designer sunglasses!
Our lucky winner for the month of May is Marketing Executive Sophie Holloway from London. Her initial consultation in Shaftesbury Avenue determined she was suitable to go ahead with surgery a few weeks later. She commented:
“First of all, thanks so much for this amazing prize! It is still sinking in that I will never have to wear glasses or contacts ever again and I’m still getting used to being able to see the moment I wake up!
“Wearing my contact lenses had become part of my life, but putting them in and removing them was always a huge hassle. I travel a bit with my job and it was a real problem when I ran out of contact lens solution or worse, ran out of lenses. I know I shouldn’t have, but I’ve worn my lenses overnight a number of time because I forgot to pack a fresh pair.
“I couldn’t believe it when I won free treatment at Optical Express and neither can my friends and family. They are equally impressed with my results. All of my family are short-sighted so they wanted to know all about my treatment and are now considering it themselves.
“I had my consultation at Optical Express’ Shaftesbury clinic and was treated at Harley Street. I was a big nervous beforehand as I had watched the procedure online. On the day, I didn’t feel a thing and it was over really quickly. The worst part was not being able to wear contact lenses for a week before my surgery – I felt really self-conscious in my glasses all week at work!
The morning after my treatment, I must admit I was shocked. I didn’t realise I’d bound out of bed and be able to see. My first check up showed that that my vision is now better than 20/20.
“I can see much more detail than I ever could with my contact lenses in. When I’m driving I can see number plates from much farther away, and when I go for the train I can see the times on the board from a greater distance.
“I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend laser eye surgery to anyone who wants to get rid of their glasses or contact lenses. The freedom is brilliant; it’s a nice feeling now that I don’t depend on contact lenses or glasses anymore.”
Unfortunately we were unable to get in touch with our April winner and they missed out on their prize!
Nicholas Moran, a video producer from London was chosen as March’s winner of free laser eye surgery! Nicholas had already recently visited Optical Express for a consultation so when we called he was surprised to hear we could go ahead and arrange his surgery! He told us:
“I was really surprised and very excited when I found out I’d won. From there on in it was all pretty straightforward. The team at Optical Express were very professional and I felt very well informed before I went for the procedure at the Shaftesbury Avenue clinic.
“From a personal confidence point of view it’s great, but also on a professional level it’s one less thing to worry about while I’m working. Wearing glasses was always very fiddly when trying to look through viewfinders and so on, but now I don’t need them. It’s amazing to be able to look over at a screen or television on the other side of a room and not need glasses, it’s very liberating. It’s actually quite hard to express the intensity of how good it feels, it’s just wonderful and I’d definitely recommend laser eye surgery to anyone.”
February’s lucky winner of FREE laser eye surgery was Guy Sim from Bristol! Guy was surprised to discover he was our winner and arranged his consultation in the Bristol Cabot Circus clinic at the end of March. After being found suitable, Guy booked his surgery for the end of April and was over the moon with his results! We spoke to him after his treatment and he commented:
“Having worn glasses for nearly 20 years, I had become used to wearing them daily even though they are useless when it rains, they break easily, cost a lot to replace and steam up when you open the oven or enter a hot room. Will I miss them however? Hell no! was it worth doing? Hell yes!! Being able to see without them once again is just brilliant and I cannot thank Optical Express enough for their generous gift of laser eye surgery.”
Our first winner of 2014 is Edel Scanlon from County Armagh! She was delighted to be chosen as our winner and said:
“Never thought for a second I’d win!! Apparently thousands entered and I was chosen!!!
“Thank you sooo much to Optical Express!! Yay!”
Edel decided to choose the £500 Optical Express vouchers as her prize, we hope she enjoys spending them!
The last winner of our laser eye surgery competition for 2013 was Elissa Hawksworth from Ruddington. Elissa was delighted to discover she had been randomly selected to receive FREE treatment and booked her initial consultation in the nearby Nottingham clinic. She told us:
“Once I was contacted by Optical Express and told I was the lucky winner I could not believe it. It wasn’t until I turned up to the Nottingham store, and was greeted by Judy, did it all become real. She was so friendly and helpful, taking me through the eye tests before I met with Amar the Optometrist for the ‘drum roll’ verdict on my suitability for the treatment. The team were all so knowledgeable, friendly and made me feel so at ease with the process I finally started to get excited about the prospect of a life with no specs. Amar explained what happened on the day of treatment, what the laser does and what aftercare I will receive but also gave me his own personal experience, as he had it successfully done himself only a few months before.”
After she was found suitable she booked her surgery for the end of February and was amazed with the results. She told us afterwards:
“On the day of surgery, I was at the store early and there were two others who were having the surgery the same morning. All of us looking a little scared and apprehensive, but I was immediately reassured and made to feel at ease by the staff looking after us.
“After the pre-surgery tests and forms were completed I was taken upstairs to the waiting room and offered a cuppa (always makes things better!) while I waited to speak to the surgeon who went through all the risks with me, he was so sympathetic and obviously knew how I was feeling and reassured me that this was normal and that he would take care of me. After watching the 2 others go in for their surgery before me and come out with their sunglasses on smiling, the nerves were calming down.
“I had drops put into my eyes to numb them and after a couple of minutes it all began. I can honestly say the procedure itself did not hurt one bit, it was uncomfortable at times but not unbearable and after wards, I was a shock to be told ‘that’s it all done’. Immediately after the surgery it felt really good, the drops were still working and my eyes felt fine, I got my prescription of drops and the trendy night time goggles and donned my sunglasses as I headed home.
“Overall I am so pleased with my new eyes, 4 weeks after the surgery I couldn’t be happier, I never have red marks on my nose from my glasses, I don’t need to wipe them when it’s raining and my bathroom shelf is no longer cluttered with contact lens bottles and cases but most importantly I can now read the bottom line of the eye test board!”
Our November winner of FREE laser eye surgery unfortunately did not claim their prize within 28 days and it was withdrawn.
Our October winner of FREE laser eye surgery was Stuart Walters from Stonehaven. Stuart went for his consultation in our Aberdeen clinic in November and had his treatment at the start of December and was delighted with the results. He told us:
“EXCELLENT SERVICE! I was treated at the Optical Express clinic in Aberdeen on December 2013 and had the iDesign iLASIK surgery. I had gone back and forth with the idea of having the surgery for months until I got this great offer from Optical Express.
“The actual surgery itself was pain free, I thought this was all lies when people said it but it didn’t hurt at all. It was slightly uncomfortable, but 100% worth it!
“My eyes were stingy after the eye drops wore off, almost like when you accidentally spray perfume in your eye, but after that passes it’s brilliant.
“When I woke the next morning my eyesight was better than 20/20 vision. I just wish I done it a lot sooner and would recommend it to anyone.”
September’s winner of laser eye surgery unfortunately did not book their consultation within 28 days therefore their prize was withdrawn.
Charlotte Wright from Tunbridge Wells was randomly selected as the winner for our August competition of FREE laser eye surgery. When we informed her of the prize she told us:
“It was on a Friday afternoon after a terrible week that I got the call to say I had won laser eye surgery with Optical Express. I was over the moon and pretty shocked as I’m not that lucky usually and had been plucking up the courage for years to go for it!”
After some consideration, Charlotte decided not to go ahead with surgery and opted to take our alternative prize of £500 Optical Express vouchers which she intends to use purchasing new designer sunglasses!
The winner of our FREE laser eye surgery competition for the month of July is Hal Shinnie from London! Hal had already visited Optical Express for a consultation when he was told he had won, so all he had to do was choose where and when he wanted treated! He told us:
“I was absolutely amazed when I got the call saying that I had won free surgery. I had been thinking about getting it done for a couple of years, but never actually got around to doing anything about it, so when I saw the chance to enter the competition I absent mindedly entered, thinking I’d never hear any more from it. However a couple of weeks later I’d had a consultation and was on the road to better vision.
“My eye sight isn’t particularly bad, just a bit short sighted, but it is soft enough to warrant wearing glasses. When I’m driving or watching television my specs don’t really bother me, but it is when I am doing something more active like cycling, fishing or hiking in the rain or indeed when I am at work as a photographer that they really start to annoy me. Getting steamed up and smeary rain across the lenses drives me around the bend and it is almost more off a hinderance to be wearing them.
“I am so looking forward to being able to see clearly without the drag of smeary, steamed up, scratched glasses on my face. I think I will particularly notice it when I am working. As a photographer I often find that during a shoot when there is a lot going that I need to think about and I’m lunging around, camera in hand trying to get find the right angle and get the most out of the subject, I get quite hot and my lenses steam up – making me flustered and making me look like a gibbering fool. I very much look forward to appearing as a cool as a cucumber during shoots…
“I am slightly apprehensive about the surgery itself, not surprisingly; however, I’ve heard such good things about how quick the recovery time is and the pretty much instant effects that despite the initial fear, I’m really looking forward to it.”
A few weeks after his surgery in Harley Street in October, we caught up with Hal to see how he was finding his new vision. Read what he said in our blog.
We were unable to get in contact with June’s winner and their prize was sadly withdrawn.
May’s lucky winner of FREE laser eye surgery was Elena Negura from Carlisle!
Elena was delighted to be chosen as our winner as she has wanted the treatment for some time. Her consultation in the Newcastle clinic determined she was suitable to proceed and she had her surgery carried out in October and she was delighted with the results.
April’s winner of FREE laser eye surgery was unfortunately unsuitable for the surgery and could not go ahead with treatment.
Miss Jessica Williams from Durham was drawn as this month’s lucky competition winner of FREE laser eye surgery. She was delighted to find out she was our winner and told us:
“I have been wearing glasses on a daily basis since I was 7 years old and have always hoped to one day be able to afford laser eye surgery. As a student I go out a lot and wearing glasses can be a real hassle. I entered the completion to win free laser eye surgery on Facebook; it was literally just a case of entering my name and email address. Then I completely forgot all about it so you can imagine my surprise when I was called and told I had won!”
Jessica was found suitable at her consultation in our Newcastle clinic and had her surgery shortly afterwards. One month post surgery she told us:
“It’s been almost 3 weeks since I underwent the laser eye treatment procedure and the results have been absolutely amazing! It still feels so strange to wake up every morning with perfect vision and to not have to put on my glasses; the strangest thing has been being able to see in the shower!”
Our winner for February unfortunately did not respond to our calls or emails and missed out on the chance of having FREE laser eye surgery!
This month’s lucky competition winner is Lisa Howarth from Darwen! We were delighted to inform her she had won laser eye surgery completely free of charge. Lisa was very surprised to win and told us ‘things like this never happen to me!’. Following her initial consultation in the Trafford centre, she told us:
“Hi my name is Lisa and I won Laser eye surgery! I still find it very hard to believe that I have won! This is the first time I have won anything so I am sure you can guess how happy I was to find out I was a winner. Sadly however, I was found unsuitable for the surgery at that time. For this reason I have decided to take the 500 pound vouchers instead which is still fantastic, I might just treat myself to my very first pair of designer sun glasses just in time for the summer holidays and who knows I might even get a spare pair just in case! Even though I was unsuitable for laser eye surgery, I found the staff very helpful and pleasant answering any question I had and the wait was not to long either. I found the overall service fantastic and would recommend Optical Express to anyone looking into laser eye surgery or glasses. Thanks again Optical Express!”
We were unable to get in contact with our December winner and their prize was sadly withdrawn.

I had the LASIK treatment which was very quick and pain free and I’m delighted with the difference it has made to my vision after years of wearing glasses and contacts. I have been recommending Optical Express to all my friends & family, I only wish I had done it years ago. Thank you to Optical Express for this fantastic prize.”
Our winner of FREE laser eye surgery for April is Faye O’Donovan from Braintree! Faye’s initial consultation took place in Chelmsford and after being found suitable for treatment, she had her treatment a few weeks later and was amazed at the results! Faye told us afterwards:
“I was delighted to win laser eye surgery with Optical Express! I was very impressed with the whole process from beginning to end, the staff were friendly and professional and the surgery was fast and painless. I would be happy to recommend laser eye surgery with Optical Express to all my friends and family.”
Jonathan Laud is our lucky winner of FREE laser eye surgery in March!
Jonathan was very surprised to discover he was our winner and told us he had already been thinking about coming for a consultation when we called to inform him of his fantastic win! His consultation is booked at the end of June in our Lincoln clinic, and treatment was carried out in Cambridge in July. He told us:
“My new eyes! The last couple of weeks of my life have been fantastic. From seeing street signs, colours being brighter and even looking up at the clouds, It’s like a whole new world is out there. I deal with customers all around Great Britain and offer a very high level of customer service and didn’t think anyone could match this until I met the team of Optical Express! From walking in the door, to the consultation and the surgery (which only took about 10 minutes) to my final check up I could not be any happier! I would just like to say a special thank you to the Lincoln team and the Cambridge clinic where I had the surgery, you have been superb. This is something I wish everyone could experience!”
