Receive written confirmation

Once you have booked your consultation we will send you a confirmation email that will confirm your chosen date, time and clinic location. The email will include a detailed map of how to get to your clinic of choice. A confirmation letter will also be sent to you by post. Both will include important information about how to prepare for your initial consultation.

Complete a Health and Lifestyle questionnaire

You will be asked to complete a health and lifestyle questionnaire in advance of your visit to our clinic. Many general health conditions and lifestyle choices can impact your vision. For us to give you the best possible outcome, it is important that you provide us with detailed information about your health background and lifestyle choices. You may choose to complete the questionnaire at the clinic. Rest assured that your responses will be kept confidential.

Receive a preparation call

A member of our care team will call you a few days before your consultation date to confirm your appointment time. You will be reminded how to prepare for your visit and what to expect on the day. This is the perfect opportunity to ask any questions you may have and to make sure you are familiar with the location of your clinic of choice.

Arrive at the clinic

The purpose of your consultation is to determine if you are suitable for treatment. It is also to ensure you are given the information you need to make an informed choice on whether you wish to have eye surgery. When you arrive at the clinic you will be welcomed by your patient advisor who will explain the different steps involved in eye surgery. The consultation will progress at a pace you are comfortable with and you will have plenty of opportunity to ask any questions. It is your decision whether you wish to proceed with treatment.

Health and Lifestyle Questionnaire review

If you have not already done so, you will complete a health and lifestyle questionnaire. Your patient advisor will assist you in any way necessary to ensure we are fully informed about important aspects of your health as well as your lifestyle choices. It is important that we understand your expectations from eye surgery. We will ask you to verify and sign a secure electronic signature pad to confirm that all details are correct.

Undergo advanced diagnostic testing

You will undergo a series of non-invasive but highly-sophisticated diagnostic tests. We will explain the function of the diagnostic instruments before carrying out each test. The results of these eye tests are much more advanced than the measurements taken during a standard eye test. You can find out more about each diagnostic test here.

Meet your optometrist

Your specialist refractive optometrist will review the information provided within your health and lifestyle questionnaire and all diagnostic results. Your optometrist will discuss in more detail your motivations behind considering eye surgery and will confirm that the details you have provided are accurately recorded

Undergo optical examinations and eye health assessment

A series of eye examinations to determine your eye health, natural vision and current prescription of each eye will be undertaken.
This eye health assessment will check the: front of your eye including your eyelids, cornea and pupil; natural lens to check for cataract; retina and macula to rule out common eye conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and blood vessel anomalies. As part of these comprehensive tests, the optometrist will place some drops in your eyes to dilate your pupil. This allows them to look at your eyes in greater detail. You may find that your vision gets a little blurred and light sensitive as a result. This is nothing to worry about, your eyes will return to normal in a few hours. It means that you can’t drive for those few hours, so you should make sure you have transport arranged to get you home.

Receive our recommendation

The optometrist will determine if you are suitable (pending your ophthalmic surgeon confirmation) for eye surgery based on your test results and the information you have provided. If you are suitable, your optometrist will provide a recommendation of the best treatment for your needs. The final decision on your suitability for surgery rests with your treating ophthalmic surgeon. The majority of patients are suitable for laser eye surgery, but you may find you are best suited for lens surgery. If you are not suitable for eye surgery, Optical Express can also offer the finest glasses and contact lenses that are currently avaiable.

Watch an informed consent video

During your consultation you will be shown a video that explains the benefits, potential risks (complications and side effects) and range of outcomes associated with eye surgery. This informed consent video will help you make a well-informed decision on whether eye surgery is right for you. We will ask you to sign an electronic signature pad to confirm that you have watched the video and understand the information that has been provided. You will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have with your optometrist.

Under the guidance of our ophthalmic surgeons, your optometrist will further discuss the benefits, risks, alternatives and range of outcomes with you. You will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have and any question you have will be answered.

Receive your patient information folder

You will be given a Patient Information Folder that will include details of your recommended procedure and important information about this procedure. It will include an Informed Consent Document informing you of the benefits, risks, range of outcomes and alternative vision correction treatments available to you. It’s important that you read this document before you have a discussion with your surgeon.

A Terms and Conditions Document is also provided and you will be required to sign both of these documents prior to surgery. These documents have been given the Crystal Clear mark awarded by The Plain English Campaign. The folder will include details of how to prepare for your surgery, what to expect on the day of surgery and your aftercare instructions. The aftercare instructions include an out of hours medical helpline number should you need to contact us out with normal working hours. All these documents can be found on our website

Receive your personal iSCAN report

Your will receive a personalised iSCAN by email shortly after your consultation. Exclusive to Optical Express iSCAN is a comprehensive eye health care and diagnostic report that reveals the unique characteristics of your eyes. Your iSCAN includes details of the health, prescription and diagnostics of your eyes. It will include your recommended treatment and surgeon details where applicable.

Read your informed consent document

This will give you a better understanding about the benefits, risks, range of outcomes of the treatment you have been recommended and alternative vision correction options available to you. It will also help you to prepare any questions you may have for your surgeon.

Attend a surgeon discussion

Your ophthalmic surgeon will have assessed all your diagnostic results and medical records prior to meeting you. Your surgeon may request or conduct further tests to make the final decision on whether you are suitable for treatment. At this discussion your surgeon will talk you through the surgery to make sure you fully understand the risks, benefits, range of outcomes and alternative vision correction treatments available to you. You will have plenty of opportunity to ask any questions. In a small number of cases your ophthalmic surgeon may recommend a different procedure that is best suited for you.

Have surgery

Your surgical care team will do everything possible to make you feel at ease. It is normal to feel a bit anxious at this point. But rest assured that our experienced surgical care team are very experienced in addressing your concerns and will make sure you are comfortable. You will be guided through each step of the procedure at your own pace. For laser eye surgery both eyes are typically treated on the same day, but each eye is operated on separately and the surgery itself only takes a few minutes to perform.

Rest after your surgery

After your treatment your surgeon will assess the immediate results and discuss them with you. A member of your surgical care team will take you to a private lounge area where you may relax while you are given your aftercare instructions. You will also receive eye drops for use during your recovery time. You will be talked through what to expect during the initial stages of recovery as your eyes heal and given detailed advice on activities to avoid during that period. You will be scheduled for a next day aftercare appointment. You are then free to leave at your own leisure and we would advise you to rest your eyes for the next few hours at home.

Attend a next day aftercare appointment

It is essential that you attend all your aftercare appointments. Your aftercare journey is just as important to us as it is to you. This starts the day after your surgery and carries on until both you and your clinical care team are happy to discharge you from our care. At your first aftercare appointment your clinical team will carry out a full eye assessment to ensure your eyes are healing as expected.

Plan your aftercare journey

Our clinical care team will continue to look after your eye health and continued vision care. Each patient is individual and your aftercare is tailored to your own unique requirements. At every aftercare appointment your clinical care team will conduct a thorough eye assessment. This includes a review of your eye health as well as your vision. At each appointment you will also be asked to complete an important questionnaire about your vision and overall experience. This questionnaire, much like a health and lifestyle questionnaire, is an integral part of your examination. The vast majority of our patients are discharged from our care between three and twelve months after the date of surgery.

Please note that there are charges for any additional post-treatment appointments outside of the inclusive periods covered in our terms and conditions. They are as follows:

Attend your annual eye examination

An eye examination is not just to check your vision it is also essential to monitor the general health of your eyes. Many health conditions can be detected during an eye examination. At Optical Express our experienced optometrists will carry out a thorough assessment of each patient’s visual health including state-of-the-art screening for diseases. This includes looking for diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and macular degeneration before they become a bigger health challenge. Conditions which, if left undiagnosed, can lead to severe sight loss.
