Our Lenses

Multifocal Lenses

For many who wear glasses or contact lenses the multifocal lens could mean independence from these. The LENTIS™ Mplus is recognised as one of the most effective treatments for presbyopia.

Monofocal Lenses

Monofocal lenses correct your vision for one particular distance. They are commonly used within the NHS for cataract procedures and are easy for your eye to adapt to.

Our clinics+

As one of the world’s largest providers of refractive surgery, over £350 million has been invested in new technology in our clinics to ensure their surgeons have access to the most advanced technological innovations in refractive surgery.

Many of our clinics are dedicated lens replacement surgery centres, meaning only the best treatment and care is allocated to patients undergoing this procedure.

Our lenses+

The new generation of Intraocular lenses are designed to last a lifetime. Available lens types include monofocal or multifocal, both with the added option of toric to correct astigmatism. Extremely high levels of short sightedness, long sightedness and astigmatism can be corrected with a synthetic lens.

Until the early twenty first century the only lenses available for lens eye surgery were monofocal, but thanks to the modern advances in lens technology, you now have the additional choice of clever multifocal lenses.

Monofocal lenses focus on one point of vision only, typically chosen to give you the best possible distance vision, therefore you will most likely still need to wear reading glasses. Many patients are happy with the vision they achieve with typical monofocal lenses, but if you are keen to be free from wearing glasses or contact lenses altogether, monovision can be a suitable alternative.

Monovision is where monofocal lenses of different strengths are placed in each eye, one for distance vision and the other for close up vision.

The more sophisticated multifocal lens can provide near, distance and intermediate vision for both eyes. These lenses are mechanically flexible and can be controlled using the same eye muscles that you use to control your natural lens.

The majority of multifocal lens patients exceed UK driving vision standard while still being able to use a computer and read newspaper print without the need for glasses or contact lenses. In over 90% of patients, no near vision spectacles are required for reading print smaller than that found in a typical newspaper.

Similar to how your glasses or contact lenses can easily correct astigmatism, a toric lens is available in both monofocal and multifocal strengths to give you high quality vision. Toric lenses not only correct moderate astigmatism that affects most patients, but now offer an advanced lens that can also treat those with high astigmatism, in fact up to twelve (12) dioptres.

Can I meet my surgeon before the day of my surgery?
Patients attend a pre-operative consultation with one of our experienced optometrists who is specifically and specially trained to work in the field of refractive surgery.

Our optometrists are responsible for establishing the baseline measurements required for the surgeon to determine suitability for the procedure. They are able to screen out those for whom refractive surgery is plainly not an option. This allows our surgeons to spend more time with patients who are, or may be candidate for surgery.

It is the surgeon who ultimately determines whether a patient is eligible for a procedure. Our surgeons are among the most experienced in the world and are also highly trained to manage rare post-operative complications. The optometrist follows up on the routine post-operative patients, but our surgeons are available for the appropriate advice and management as required.

Meeting the surgeon on the day of treatment also ensures that the treating surgeons is handling the final consent process as well as carrying out the procedure.

How qualified are your optometrists?
All of our optometrists are registered with the General Optical Council and have attended and passed our rigorous training courses which cover all aspects of refractive surgery in terms of pre-operative and post-operative evaluation, technology and post-operative care.
