Firemen scale new heights

Firefighters from Kingsway East fire station climbed the world's tallest mountain - without leaving Dundee city centre.

Crew from Green Watch climbed the equivalent of Mount Everest's 29,029 feet on a fire truck ladder at the Optical Express store in High Street.

Organiser Rob Taylor said each of the 15 firefighters had to climb up and down the 40-foot ladder 50 times to cover the distance. While each member of the crew was taking his turn, his colleagues were collecting donations from passers by.

The £2100 raised, plus £700 from selling special pig snouts-will go to Dreamz4U, the Dundee based charity that provides treats and outings for sick and disabled children.

Rob said, "We wanted to raise money for the charity and this seemed like a good way to do it. Optical Express have been very supportive and the city council have also been great. I also have to thank Braes Public House who provided refreshments for the firefighters."

The event was just one of many in Dundee in recent days in support of Pig Snout Day, a fund-raising campaign for Dreamz4U.
