Mr. Joseph Colin

Dr Joseph Colin received his MD in 1977 from the Brest University; he completed his ophthalmology residency and fellowship in Brest University Medical School and Nantes University, France, where he specialized in anterior segment surgery.

Promoted to Professor of Ophthalmology in 1982, he was Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Brest University Medical School until September 2000.

He is currently Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Bordeaux University Medical School.

He was president of the French National University Council for Ophthalmology (1995-2003).

He currently serves on the Board of the French Society of Refractive Surgery (SAFIR). He also serves on the Board of the French Eye Bank.

He was a member of the board of the National French Ophthalmological society (SFO) from 2001 to 2008 and president of the SFO for three years.

Research activities include:

  • Corneal Surgery, Refractive Surgery; Cataract Surgery.

  • Lasers : Development of a new femtolaser (FEDER grant)

  • National Reference Center for Keratoconus in France (French Ministry of Health)

  • Several clinical investigations for new phakic IOLs

  • Development of new technologies for the diagnosis and management of corneal ectasia

Participation in editorial boards

  • Refractive and Corneal Surgery (1990 - )

  • Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (1994 - ).

  • European Journal of Ophthalmology ( 1998 - )

  • Journal Français d'Ophtalmologie ( 1982 - )

Educational activities:

He is co-director of the French Educational Programme for cataract and refractive surgery (DIU de chirurgie réfractive ) and is director of the French Educational Programme for contact lenses.

He is chairman of the University Hospital Ophthalmology Department in Bordeaux : 3 Professors , 3 associate professors , 4 fellows, and 12 interns. He is director of the school of orthoptists in Bordeaux (40 students).

  • 1st Prize for the best film SFO (1987)

  • Binkhorst Medal of ESCRS: (Dublin 1990)

  • 1st Prize for best film " Innovation in Refractive Surgery " ESCRS (Gotheborg 1996 )

  • Honor Award of AAO (Oct 1998 )

  • Lans Award of International Society of Refractive Surgery Miami (July 1999).

  • Prize for the best film SFO (May 2005)

  • John Pierce medal of UKISCRS (Chester Sept .2005)

  • Senior Achievement award of the AAO (Nov. 2007)

  • 1st Prize for the best film SFO (2008)

Dr. Colin has actively participated in the AAO, ESCRS , ASCRS and ISRS meetings during the last decade.

He has attended and has participated in the scientific program (free papers, symposium, courses) of all the ESCRS meetings since 1985 and all the ESCRS Winter meetings.

He has initiated the European Educational Programme for Refractive Surgery with the ESCRS.

He is a member of the ESCRS Programme and of the cornea committees.
