Cataracts & Cataract Surgery

What is a cataract?

A cataract forms when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, causing vision to deteriorate. While there are factors that may contribute to the formation of cataracts, this condition is a natural part of the ageing process; just like greying hair and the loss of close up vision (presbyopia).

Luckily, cataracts are treatable. A cataract operation can restore vision and make it easier for people to enjoy reading, playing sports and making the most of their lives.

Cataract surgery explained

Cataract surgery is a safe operation, performed on thousands of people each week. Furthermore, over 14 million procedures are performed annually worldwide - that's more than any other surgical procedure. Recent advances in microsurgical techniques and new developments in intraocular lens surgery (IOL) treatments favour a successful cataract operation which leads to the restoration of your vision.

Intraocular lens surgery is a different type of treatment to laser eye surgery, but can also help people live a life free of glasses or contact lenses by improving their vision as well as relieving the symptoms of cataracts.

Recovery after cataract eye surgery

After treatment for cataracts, you'll find the recovery period is normally very short. In the majority of cases, cataract patients find they are able to return to normal activities within a few days of surgery.

Vision is likely to be blurred immediately after the procedure, so it's necessary to make arrangements for someone to drive you home after surgery and you are advised to rest for the remainder of the day. You may experience some minor discomfort and itching in the hours following the procedure.

While some people experience an improvement in their vision immediately following their cataract surgery, it can often take a few days. The recovery period for cataract operations tends to last between two and six weeks.
