Using & Removing Eye Makeup

Whether throwing on a coat of mascara and under-eye concealer for work, or glitzing it up with a dramatic smoky-eye for a night out, eye makeup is a part of everyday life for most women.

In order to keep your eyes healthy, however, while enjoying all the benefits of eye makeup, it is important to keep a few tips in mind.

Using & Removing Eye MakeupMascara should be kept for three months maximum, and never shared with friends. If it develops a strange smell, get rid of it immediately. If you are getting your makeup done, ensure that the makeup artist is using a new mascara wand, and if you are unsure, then wait until you get home and apply your own mascara. If you are vigilant about one eye makeup product, make it mascara - it is one of the most likely sources of bacteria and infection.

Cream eyeshadow and eyeliners can be kept for six months, while powder eyeshadow can last up to two years. Brushes must be cleaned regularly, however, and none of these products should be shared with friends.

Eye makeup should be removed before you go to bed - leaving it on is bad for both your skin, and your eyes. Simply washing your face will not do the trick, especially given the prevalence of waterproof and long-lasting products designed to withstand basic cleansing. Invest in an eye-makeup remover, particularly if you use waterproof makeup. If you are willing to invest the time in putting on makeup, then there is no reason not to take a few moments to take it off for the sake of your eye health!
