Guide to Sports Eyewear

Sports can be great for the body and wreak havoc on the eyes. Regardless of whether you're playing contact sports or going for a sunny jog in the park, it is important to be prepared for whatever hazards your eyes might encounter.

Swimming can be tough on the eyes, particularly if you're using a chlorinated pool. Spectacles aren't really an option in the water, and some find contact lenses difficult to swim with. Goggles are a great way to protect your eyes and lenses, but it is important to make sure you have a proper fit. Prescription goggles are also an option.

If you're doing any water sport outside, from sailing to wakeboarding, make sure you're wearing sunglasses, even if it isn't particularly sunny out. The reflection off the water can be deceptively strong. The same logic applies to skiers and snowboarders - pick goggles that protect from UV rays or wear sunglasses - the reflection off the snow can be dangerous not only for your eyes, but also make it difficult to see where you're going!

If the sport you are playing endangers your eyes because of flying balls or pucks - be it in squash, lacrosse, or hockey - make sure you wear protective eyewear. It may be difficult to adjust to at first, but it's not worth the risk to your eyesight. It is often possible to get this eyewear with prescriptions, so you don't have to sacrifice vision or safety.

The bottom line is, protect your eyes. If it's sunny out, make sure you are wearing sunglasses, and if the sport you are playing exposes you to any other dangers, wear protection accordingly. If in doubt, talk to experts in your sport of choice about what brands and styles are best suited to that activity. Staying active is an important part of living a healthy life, but doing so should not be at the expense of your eye health!
