Air Conditioning & Your Eyes

Temperatures have finally soared into the double digits, and while it's not quite swimsuit season yet, it's almost time to turn on the A/C. While air conditioning has many obvious benefits, however, it also has a number of downsides, particularly for your skin and eyes. Even for those who would prefer to go without and enjoy the heat, it can often be hard to escape, from office buildings to shopping malls.

The biggest issue caused by air conditioning is dry eyes. Some individuals are already predisposed to this condition, while those who wear contact lenses often find that their lenses make them more susceptible to dry eyes. To put it simply, air conditioners exacerbate these predispositions and this susceptibility, causing mild discomfort.

One simple solution to alleviate symptoms of dry eyes is artificial tears, or lubricating drops. For those who do wear contact lenses, if you are spending an extended period of time – such as a working day – in an air conditioned environment, it might be wise to consider switching to glasses a few days a week (or a few hours a day) while it's A/C season, or even looking at more hydrating brands of contact lenses. If you’re predisposed to dry eyes, speak with your Optometrist about possible solutions – omega-3 fatty acids, for instance, have been shown in some studies to relieve dry eye.

It can also be helpful to make efforts to reduce exposure to other factors that may be causing dry eyes. Stay hydrated, and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from wind, dust and sun - sunglasses should already be a staple part of your summer wardrobe. If you’re using an air conditioner in your home, you can purchase a humidifier, which will add moisture to the air. As well, if you spend a significant portion of the day staring at a computer, it is beneficial to position your computer as to minimise eye strain, which is typically just at or below eye level.

Air conditioners are largely unavoidable during the summer months, though they prove to be a blessing when weather’s truly scorching. In addition, for those who suffer from seasonal allergies, air conditioned buildings can provide welcome relief from the pollen-filled environment outside. The best way to contend with the negative effects of air conditioners, however, is to be prepared, taking steps in all areas of your life to reduce factors that may contribute to dry eye, and arriving at work, or whatever your air conditioned environment may be, equipped with artificial tears. With the right preparations, you can enjoy the sunny season and appreciate the benefits of A/C without worrying about dry eyes.
